KEVIN I still live with my mum. My mum. She's getting on, didn't have me till she was nearly 40. She's been good to me over the years but to be honest, she's a problem now, forgets who I am sometimes.
Drives me crazy. Sometimes I get phoned at work, have to collect her from wherever she's got lost this time. Manager said I'd lose my job if it happens again.
(Change of tone - forced brightness - gets up and goes to the audience) Now I ask you, would you marry this man? No maybe not,
but you have to keep trying don't you? (Goes back to the table, clearly making the story up and testing it as he goes along. She reacts as he speaks) I'm 31, no 29, about five foot ten. (Stretches up to look taller in his chair) Dark hair - at least that bit's true - live in a penthouse flat - no perhaps that's going a bit far -
- live in a flat in town. I haven't even told you what I do (Self-mocking) - that's mostly because I haven't decided yet.
Here goes. I'm an airline pilot. Sounds glamorous I know,
but it's mainly local flights. Just routine. Carry a laptop with me so I can be on the net 'anytime, anywhere'. Even in mid-air. (She looks worried. He adds reassuringly) Not when we're taking off or landing
of course. (She relaxes) My real name is (thinks) 'Dave'
not 'Bullworker'. I made that up. (as if it weren't obvious.
He's looking quite pleased with himself) Don't suppose you're really called 'Stargazer6' either, are you.
Sally comes forward to speak to audience. He stays at the table
SALLY 'Dave, an airline pilot.' I knew this one was something special. It's the way he writes, it's so genuine somehow,
you can tell he's honest can't you? Just like he was talking to me
deep voice, quiet, thoughtful, maybe a bit like Tom Cruise. He wrote five times yesterday - five times - I've saved him on floppy disk.
