THE MAGIC SHOES
by Jack Burgess An original script from a new writer featuring dragons, a dancing theme, and a trio of classic villains.
"It is always a pleasure to welcome a new, talented writer." - Amateur Stage, June 200
"A well-crafted script. . . (will) appeal to the family audience with plenty of slapstick and one liners." - Scene, May 2004
"Panto (The Magic Shoes) went very well. Completely sold out both nights which surprised me since it wasn't one of the traditional stories! Cast liked the script very much and felt very comfortable with it. Perhaps you could pass that on to Mr Burgess! Audience reaction has been very positive also." - Jean Ross, Kemnay Players
Thanks to the Painswick Players for this picture from their 2003 production.

Script Sample - Deep in the Dungeon
A dungeon. It is gloomy and damp. A steady drip, drip can be heard throughout. Maybe a few torture sounds off - chains jangling, screams, moans, whip cracks etc etc. Stage front left sits a small frog with attitude (Phineas) going through a pile of books, magazines etc, discarding each after a quick glance

There is a commotion from offstage, much jangling of keys etc. The door creaks open. The Princess is thrown inside. The door slams, followed by keys turning, bolts being bolted etc.
Dunfer throws the Princess into the dungeon
Dunfer Enjoy your stay!
He exits with much evil laughter
More jangling of keys etc. A slight pause with the Princess in despair. Then yet more jangling of keys, and the door creaks open
Princess Saved!
Dunfer(popping head around the door) It's only me! Just wanted to say that if your father - God bless his soul - makes it back OK after all, that I was just following orders. Nothing personal, you understand? (Exits)
Door slams, followed by more keys turning, bolts being bolted etc.
Princess Oh! What is to become of me? Imprisoned in this evil, damp, foul-smelling dungeon! All alone! I'm so unhappy. If only someone could help me. I must not give up hope. I must keep myself happy with happy thoughts.
Song 10
Princess Who knows, perhaps a handsome prince will come and rescue me.
She notices the frog for the first time
Hello, little frog! Will you be my friend? I wonder if I were to -
She goes up to Phineas, puckers up to kiss him
Phineas Don't even think about it! And I'm not 'a little frog': the name is Phineas and I'm actually quite tall for my age. And I am fed up of being kissed by all and sundry in the hopes that I'll transform into a handsome young prince. Cos I don't do that. I just stay as a frog and do froggy things.
Princess Like what?
Phineas Well I read a lot.
Princess But why here?
Phineas Because it's the only place I can get some peace and quiet, particularly since this dancing craze started. Or at least it was until you burst in!
Princess Oh sorry! I thought everyone liked dancing. I love it.
Phineas You would! If you were small, green, and squadgy with every likelihood of being squadged underfoot, you wouldn't. (He goes back to his pile of books) Reddit! Reddit! Reddit!
Princess What are you doing now?
Phineas Just checking that I've read all these books before I take them back to the library.
Princess Back to the library? You mean, you can escape from here?
Phineas Of course.
Princess How?
Phineas Through the drains.
Princess Ugh! That must be all slimy and yucky!
Phineas Well a bit damp, perhaps. But that's how us frogs like it.
Princess Could I escape through the drains?
Phineas Naaah. You're too big. And the wrong shape. What you need is a prince.
Princess Oh yes! A prince! If only I could find one.
Phineas Oh, that's easy enough. Just look one up…
Princess How do you mean?
Phineas Best Princes Guide. I've got one here somewhere. (He rummages through the pile of books and picks out a directory) Here we go! Let's see what we can find.
