Geoffrey enters playing with a yo-yo. He can’t work it! He is a young man of sixteen, awkward and slightly gawky. He is wearing ex-army issue shorts and his ‘Sunday best’ shirt

Geoffrey(to himself) Must be broken!

He sees Vera and is interested. He licks his hands and tries to smear down his hair, to no avail. He smells under both his armpits to make sure he is not sweaty and being happy with this, nonchalantly strolls down the steps onto the beach. He stops. He doesn’t know what to do

Vera has taken out a small mirror from her bag and is applying some lipstick

He stands squirming. After some time he runs back up to the ‘path’ behind the railings. He gives himself a stiff talking to

Don’t be so stupid, she’s only a girl. She won’t bite. (Pause) Go and talk to her. Right. I can’t, you can. You’ve seen them do it on the pictures. (He looks at her) She looks very attractive. Not that looks are everything. I like a girl with personality as well. But looks do help. Oh hurry up! I can feel myself going red. It’s a terrible affliction, terminal blushing! Oh no! Now I want to pee. (He clutches himself)

Vera has noticed him talking to himself. She has finished her make-up, puts it away and looks at Geoffrey

Vera Talk to yourself a lot, do you?
Geoffrey (weakly) No.

She notices him clutching himself

Vera You’re not some sort of pervert, are you?
Geoffrey What?

She nods in the general area of where he is clutching himself

No, certainly not, it’s just that I need a ... excuse me!

He runs off

Vera What a strange boy! (She goes back to her reading. Then she looks up) That’s boys all over, that is, obsessed with their thingies. (She quotes from the magazine) "How to find true love. The first in an occasional series that lets you know if you’ve met the man of your dreams. This test has been specifically put together by members of the medical profession." Must be true then! Well here goes. One. "When you meet the man you love you might find your heart beating a little faster". (She puts her hand on her heart) No. Two. "You might find yourself breathing a little faster". (She checks) No. Three. "Your cheeks may take on a rosy tinge".

Geoffrey enters

Vera sees him. He stands awkwardly staring at her

What are you gawping at?
Geoffrey I wasn’t gawping!
Vera Yes you were, I know a gawp when I see one! You’re not backward, are you?
Geoffrey No! Certainly not.
Vera How old are you?
Geoffrey Sixteen.
Vera So am I. But I prefer older boys.
Geoffrey Oh.

An awkward pause

Vera Have my cheeks taken on a rosy tinge?
Geoffrey What?
Vera Have my cheeks taken on a rosy tinge?
Geoffrey Um, well, um, I can’t really see from here.
Vera Well come closer and have a look then. I need to know!

He comes right up to her

Geoffrey What was the question?
Vera Have my cheeks taken on a rosy tinge?
Geoffrey I suppose.
Vera Get right close up.

He does, and looks closely, they suddenly realise their lips nearly met and back away from each other embarrassed

What’s your name?
Geoffrey (coyly) Geoffrey. What’s yours?
Vera (coyly) Vera.
Geoffrey That’s a nice name. Vera, a nice name.
Vera Thanks.
