RAIN ON ME
Mark Rees' award-winning drama for teenagers was first performed at the Lochside Theatre Castle Douglas in February 2001. It went on to win the Quidi Vidi trophy at the Scottish Youth Finals in Dundee in June the same year.
PLOT RESUME
A modern "Romeo & Juliet" with overtones of "West Side Story" and "Roxanne". While the drama is serious in parts, it is hugely entertaining and contains realistic and sometimes hilarious dialogue which will have much appeal to teenage casts. There are fourteen parts, which means lots of involvement.

The action takes place in various situations. So a composite set that can become anywhere would be useful. It should maybe have a Gothic theme with large pillars.

Script Sample
A parody of the 'balcony' scene. Present are Kevin, Lucy and the Narrator. Kevin mimes picking up a stone and throwing it at the window. Nothing happens. He picks up another and throws it. Nothing happens
NARRATOR Throw it harder. Oh give it to me.
She throws the stone. Sound effect of breaking glass. Lucy appears at the window
You see.
LUCY Who’s there?
Silence
There’s somebody there. I know.
NARRATOR (hissing to Kevin) Go on, speak to her.
KEVIN Lucy, it’s me.
LUCY Kevin, Kevin, wherefore art thou Kevin?
KEVIN I’m here. Can’t you put a light on?
LUCY I’d better not. It might wake the family then there’d be hell to pay. What are you doing here anyway? It’s three in the morning.
KEVIN Doing here? Yes, I’m . . . .I. . .
NARRATOR Couldn’t stop thinking about you.
KEVIN Couldn’t stop thinking about you.
LUCY That’s nice.
NARRATOR You fill my every waking thought.
KEVIN You fill my every waking thought.
LUCY Oh Kevin I didn’t realise.
NARRATOR There comes a time in your life. ..
KEVIN There comes a time in your life. . . .
NARRATOR When you see something you really want and just have to go and get it.
KEVIN When you see something you really want and just have to go and get it.
NARRATOR And you are that something.
KEVIN And you are that something. (To Narrator) That’s not very romantic.
NARRATOR (to audience) So now he wants poetry.
LUCY Is there someone else with you Kevin?
KEVIN No, no, I was just talking to myself.
NARRATOR Your eyes are like limpid pools.
KEVIN What?
NARRATOR You wanted poetry. Go on.
KEVIN Your eyes are like limpid pools.
NARRATOR Your hair curls like the waves on the beach of my heart.
KEVIN Now you’re going too far.
NARRATOR Say it.
KEVIN Your hair curls like the waves on the beach of my heart.
LUCY Kevin I’ve got straight hair. But I get your meaning.
KEVIN You see Lucy. . . .I . .think. ..this is difficult for me to say. I think I love you.
LUCY Oh Kevin.
NARRATOR I didn’t tell you to say that.
KEVIN Just shut up.
LUCY That’s not very nice.
KEVIN Not you. I was talking to myself again.
