Sample Script - An evil plan
Jim is at the helm with Captain Smollett
Captain It’s nearly nightfall - and night falls pretty quickly around here. (Exits)
SFX: large thud, lights go down to night
Jim Good grief! He wasn’t wrong there!
Jim fixes a rope to stay the ship’s wheel, and wanders to the front looking wistfully at the stars
Four weeks at sea, and I’m missing Polly desperately. For tuppence I’d jack this whole venture in and return home to England to propose to her... Only thing is, I don’t feel I’d be worthy of her unless I could make my own way in the world. (Sits down) It’s not fair - I’ve been left on my own up here, hungry and tired, while the others are below eating dinner. I think I’ll help myself to an apple from the apple-barrel.
Jim goes over to the barrel, and looks in
Oh no, there are only a few left, right down at the bottom. I’ll have to climb inside to reach one…
He climbs into the barrel. At this point, Long John, Aaron C Rescue and Mad Maria come up onto deck from the cabin
Mad Maria I’m fed up with this waiting - we’re all but there now. Why don’t we slit their throats while they sleep and steal the treasure map for ourselves?
Aaron Spot on, Mad Maria, we’re not used to taking orders - it should be us who’s giving the orders...
Mad Maria ...with cold steel (draws her cutlass menacingly)
Long John Now hold your sea-horses you two. You always were a pair of hot-heads, but that evil old ghost Cap’n Flint told us to play the longer game... How would we navigate the creek without a captain then? You’d have us on the rocks before you could say Davey Jones. We need Smollett, and if we mutinied now I’ll wager he wouldn’t play along. Don’t you worry, we’ll spill their blood when the time is ripe...
Mad Maria ...and feed their bodies to the bilge-rats!
Mad Maria cackles bloodthirstily. Jim puts his head up out of the barrel and sees them
Jim Oh no! We’re in mortal danger... I’d better keep my head down - while I’ve still got one! (To audience) Don’t tell them I’m here.
Jim ducks down into the barrel again
Aaron Hey, did you hear something? I could have sworn there’s someone else up on deck.
Long John (moves forward menacingly, to address the audience) Now then you swabs! I’ll swear I heard something - where is the spy hiding? Tell me, or it’ll go the worse with you!
The pirates do some business with the audience, demanding to know where the person is, and threatening them in a pirate-like manner for not telling. Meanwhile, Jim periodically pops his head up out of the barrel (the pirates have their backs to him), motions “no, don’t tell” to the audience, then ducks down again just before one of the pirates whirls around to have a look
Mad Maria (to audience, menacingly) Come on you lot, out with it! Or I’ll slice you up and feed you to the sharks!
Aaron (to Mad Maria, about the audience) Shiver my sides Maria, there’s something fishy going on here. I’ve never seen a pack of fools look fishier.
Long John Ah.. to the devil with you all! Maybe we was hearing things, or maybe we wasn’t. Leastways we’ll be doubly careful from now on - come on lads, back down below before we’s missed.
They exit down below deck, L
Jim emerges from the barrel looking terrified, and paces from side to side, wringing his hands
Jim What are we to do?
